How To Get Lean Legs

As a result of the Robb Wolf podcast (robbwolf.com/podcast) last week which focused on lowering estrogen levels, leading to leaner legs, a bunch of questions came up which I’d like to deal with here.

To summarize, Estrogen is metabolized by the liver. The liver converts excess estrogens into compounds that can be excreted by the body. There are three pathways through which estrogen can be metabolized. The pathways are basically viewed as follows:

1) 2-OH – healthy
2) 16-OH – unhealthy and can lead to cancer
3) 4-OH- unhealthy

In this case, metabolites carry the toxins out of the body (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metabolite) Because the 2-OH pathway is the healthiest and safest, it needs to be enhanced. If simply enhanced, there’s still an inherent risk in oxidation of the metabolite, that can cause problems. Thus, there needs to be a high level of antioxidants in the blood stream for prevention of oxidation.

Further, one needs to ensure the following need to be in order for the process to be effective:
1) Improved GI Health. Make sure you have good gut flora and plenty of fiber in the diet to prevent the enzyme B-glucouronidase from unbinding estrogens that are being excreted and returning them into the blood stream.
2) You need to be on a high protein diet to make sure Cytochrome P450 (helps the liver detoxify estrogens) stays active. High protein diets also supply plenty of the appropriate amino acids needed in liver detoxification.
3) Your liver must be healthy because, well, your liver has to process the toxins. Many Americans have liver-related issues preventing the benefits of an estrogen detoxification

Suggested Products for the process:
1) Estrium, which is a very complete product for estrogen metabolism. It has Aromatase inhibitors, which will keep your body from converting your testosterone to estrogen (not good while trying to lower your estrogen levels). It also enhances the c2 pathway and includes agents helping in the final stages of detoxification.

2) Dimension 3 includes primarily dim and curcumin. Dim, a plant compound found in cruciferous vegetable (although you’d have to eat many pounds of broccoli, daily, for this process to work) focuses on enhancing the c2 pathway. Curcumin (a principle ingredient found in the Indian spice, Tumeric) provides a nice dose of antioxants to make sure the c2 metabolites do not oxidize.

3) Hormone Protect is a combination of dim and sulforphane. Sulforphane is also found in cruciferous vegetables, and has been found to share anticancer, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial properties. However, for our needs in lowering estrogen, it also helps with the phase 2 part of detoxifying of the liver. Phase 2 is the conversion of fat soluble toxins to water soluble toxins so they can leave the body. Without it, the toxins will just continue to circulate and eventually re-absorbe: not healthy and a complete waste of time.

In summation, here are a small list the common symptoms associated with high estrogen levels: carrying excess fat on your thighs, and having very heavy PMS symptoms. If you experience any of these the above listed products will aid you in your journey to a healthy lean body. By lowering your estrogen levels, your legs will become leaner and those PMS symptoms have will lessen.

    Hi,
I listened to the podcast and came over to you website to look into this a bit more. Thanks for the great info. I was just wondering if you could speak to the dosages of those recommended products a bit more. Are they to be taken in conjunction with each other? Only one at a time? Are they a daily 365 thing? Or only for a couple of weeks during a detox?

    • Brad Davidson

Krista these products can be taken a number of ways depending on what you are dealing with. The true safe bet that helps just about every man and woman is the Estrium. The studies show 2 scoops 2x’s a day as a shake is where the benefit lies. I also like to alternate products like Dimension 3 and Hormone Protect. I usually won’t have people take those at the same time. Safe dosage on those is 1 cap 2x’s daily. Depending on a person’s situation we will use more. I will also do 7 day detoxes that use a lot more of the products for that time period but that is done on an individual basis. If you would like more info on this stuff you can email me at info@starktraining.com.

What do you say to the post-menopausal woman (52 years old)? Any recommendations?

  • Amber

Some of these products are hard to find. Do you have recomended vendor?

  • Claire

Brad – I too listened to the podcast. Fantastic information and well communicated to the masses. Thanks ever so much for sharing.

The Metagenics site has a disclaimer about their estrogen products not having been tested in conjunction with hormonal birth control. Is there a legitimate danger of unplanned pregnancies if women on hormonal birth control use these products? Also, do you have a blog post anywhere about how birth control affects women’s training and physiques?

    • Brad Davidson

Basically, pregnancy can never be 100% avoided without total abstinence. That said, any time you are regulating the body’s ability to detoxify, whether it be liver, Estrogen pathways etc…there is going to be a certain level of clearance with all ingested materials as that is the ultimate goal. This will also effect the efficacy of hormonal birth control or any other medications as you are clearing more effectively and efficiently. You can’t clear the body exclusionary of Birth Control, as the body sees that as a toxin/something to clear….I currently do not have a blog post about how birth control effects women’s training and physiques but I will put that on the list for blogs to film in the near future.

Brad, any good reads/citations for the estrogen degradation/physiological metabolism and elimination that you’re talking about here? I was able to find the 16-C pathway’s link to cancer but not much else with some PubMed-ing. Biochem geek just geeking out 🙂 Good stuff!

Hi Brad, have you considered using Indole 3 Carbinol over DIM? If your preference is DIM, why?

Brad, how does a product like Estrium align with the paleo lifestyle? I’m very interested in the benefits of cleansing excess estrogen out of my system but I’m following a strict paleo diet. Do you have clients qho are using the product and following the lifestyle? Thanks!

    • Brad Davidson

Chrissy it fits right in with the Paleo lifestyle. Following a paleo diet actually allows the body to be more efficient at detoxifying estrogens and other toxins for that matter.

will these supplements also work for guys trying to get lean legs?

    • Brad Davidson

Yes these products work great for keeping testosterone elevated and estrogen under control helping to lean out guys legs. I personally alternate between Estrium and i5, and then add in one other estrogen product every month. Currently I am taking Calcium D Gluterate.

Great podcast and blog posts. I noticed the Estrium said 14 servings for roughly $55. Does that mean if drinking two shakes a day then the container of Estrium would only last 7 days? That would be over $200 per month and hard for me to continue long term.

    • Brad Davidson

Celest we are actually working on a new product in capsule form to replace Estrium at a much more affordable cost. Currently the Estrium is the most complete product on the market but we are working out the final details to carry the replacement. Stay tuned!!

Brad, also in terms of gut health. I have been drinking 16 oz of Kombucha daily to try and help my gut health, but I am still not very regular. The only time I am regular is if I supplement daily with Natural Calm (Mg). I am strictly Paleo so I get tons of fiber from my CSA vegetables. Anything else you would recommend?
